Embodiment of Compassion
I have heard many incidents about Guruji’s compassion, narrated by my friends, before I had a chance to meet him in person. One incident that stays on top of the list, is the story about Guruji taking on the suffering of a woman in Delhi, who was suffering from a disease, on himself, out of pure compassion for the person. To me, this was the greatest act of compassion and is possible only for a Mahatma (Great Soul). Till then, I have only read in books of such acts in the life of great Saints of the past, but it was the first time I realized there is one such great Master living among us. Very soon, a similar incident happened in my life, after I met Guruji for the first time.
I met Guruji for the first time on December 25th 2009 and had the rare privilege of travelling with Him to Rameswaram and Thiruvannamalai. At the end of the trip, we returned to Chennai as Guruji had to take his flight the next day to Delhi. Guruji stayed in the house of one of our friends that night. We had arranged for a small darshan the next day, for people who wanted to meet Guruji to get his blessings. My mom happened to be very sick at that time due to Chikungunya and was not in a position to travel to my friend’s house to visit Guruji. Inspite of her illness, she told me that she wanted to meet Guruji. So, I took her along with my father to meet Guruji. In a few minutes, Guruji kept his hands on my mother’s head with his eyes closed. He was in that state for atleast 30 to 40 seconds. I thought Guruji was blessing my mom. The truth of what happened became clearer to me only a few days after Guruji left to Delhi.
I came to know that Guruji was very sick soon after he landed in Delhi. I initially thought this was a result of his tour in South India, which I later dismissed as Guruji does not get sick generally from travel, as he travels quite a bit. My mom’s health was improving drastically on the other hand. It took Guruji a few weeks to come back to normal health. While, it may appear on the surface that there was no connection between these two events, my mom’s health getting better and Guruji’s health becoming worse, in my heart of hearts, I knew for a fact that it was Guruji’s Infinite compassion for his devotee, that made him take on my mom’s suffering on himself. I was very concerned about Guruji’s health and felt helpless that I could not do anything to prevent this from happening.
This was the first, of the many incidents to follow, where I have witnessed the great compassion of a Saint in front of my eyes. This event made a very strong impact on my mind for the rest of my life.
I feel very fortunate that these mortal eyes have been blessed to see the Divine in flesh and blood in the form of Guruji, walking on this earth with us, to help us lead a pure and happy life.
